Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research was built in 1963 near the summit of 10,783-ft South Baldy Peak to provide a base for the study of cloud processes that produce lightning, hail, and rain.

The Magdalena Mountains offer favorable conditions for the study of storms because many occur there during the summer, and often the storms are isolated, stationary, and relatively small.

Langmuir Laboratory welcomes visitors in July and August when the "monsoon season" arrives in New Mexico bringing frequent thunderstorms which are studied by researchers. The laboratory facilities are closed to the public other months of the year, but the Langmuir Research Site is open year-round for hiking and other permitted recreational activities, subject to National Forest regulations and specific closures which may be posted from time to time by the Magdalena Ranger District.

Recreational activities include hiking, camping, horseback riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, hunting, and four-wheeling to name a few. ... Primary recreational values are the many dispersed, primitive, and unconfined acres. Created in 1980, the Apache Kid and Withington Wilderness' are located in the San Mateo Mountains. Some 190 miles of trails are located throughout the district centered primarily in the Magdalena and San Mateo Mountains. Maintained roads total about 500 miles with another 600 miles of unimproved roads. Thompson Canyon is a noted popular rock climbing area with the challenging Enchanted Tower.

Mule and whitetail deer, elk, black bear, mountain lion, turkey and pronghorn antelope are all common game species. An array of birds including small European falcons (kestrels) and golden eagles and small mammals can also be found throughout most of the District. Sensitive, threatened, and endangered Mexican spotted owls and peregrine falcons are also present.

* Anyone who does not obey the park speed limits will be asked to leave.

I consider myself to be the luckiest person in the world to be able to live and work in God's creation on the Montosa Ranch. I want the ranch to be protected so that it looks like this for the next fifty generations and beyond. I want the land left as it is. I don't want to see the kind of subdivisions that are being developed around Datil on this land. I want other people to see that nature can be managed for the future, and that it doesn't have to be abused.
